The Blue Emperor Tetra, also known as the Blue Kerri Tetra or Emperor Kerri Tetra, is a breathtaking freshwater species admired for its deep metallic blue body, subtle purple hues, and graceful movement. As one of the most stunning blue tetras in the aquarium hobby, the Blue Emperor Tetra fish combines beauty, calm temperament, and hardiness, making it a perfect choice for community and planted tanks alike.
Originating from the rivers and tributaries of Brazil, the Blue Emperor Tetra (Inpaichthys kerri) thrives in soft, slightly acidic waters rich in vegetation. In the wild, these Tetra fish inhabit shaded forest streams where they form small, peaceful schools. In aquariums, their shimmering blue and violet tones intensify under natural or LED lighting, making them one of the most visually captivating tetras types available.
A full-grown Blue Emperor Tetra typically reaches around 1.5–2 inches (4–5 cm) in length. Males are slightly larger and exhibit more intense coloration with extended tail filaments, while females are rounder with a lighter tone. When kept in a well-maintained aquarium, their colors deepen into radiant blue with silver and lavender reflections, giving your tank a refined, glowing appearance.
Blue Emperor Tetras are peaceful, social schooling fish that thrive in groups of at least 6 or more. They occupy the middle levels of the aquarium and get along well with other gentle community fish. Suitable Blue Emperor Tetra tank mates include Rasboras, Guppies, dwarf Gouramis, Corydoras catfish, and other small Tetras. Their calm nature and graceful swimming make them ideal for planted and aquascaped aquariums.

Blue Emperor Tetra Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are Blue Emperor Tetras aggressive?
No, Blue Emperor Tetras are not aggressive. They are peaceful schooling fish that do best in groups of six or more. Occasionally, males may display mild fin-flaring or chasing to establish dominance, but this behavior is harmless and short-lived. In a well-sized Blue Emperor Tetra aquarium with plenty of space and plants, they coexist perfectly with other peaceful tropical fish such as rasboras, guppies, and small gouramis.
Can I keep Blue Emperor Tetra with Betta fish?
Yes, you can keep Blue Emperor Tetras with Betta fish under the right conditions. Both species prefer warm, calm, planted tanks with stable temperatures around 78°F (25°C). Because Blue Emperor Tetras are mid-level swimmers and Bettas tend to stay near the surface, they rarely compete for territory. However, ensure your Betta has a gentle temperament and that the tank has hiding spots and open swimming areas to prevent stress.
What is the Blue Emperor Tetra lifespan?
The Blue Emperor Tetra lifespan averages 4–5 years, though with excellent care, some may live even longer. To maximize their lifespan, maintain clean water, feed a varied diet of flakes, micro pellets, and frozen foods, and keep them in stable groups. A balanced, well-maintained Blue Emperor Tetra tank encourages their stunning coloration and ensures long-term health and vitality.
