The Black Balloon Molly, also known as the Black Molly Fish, is a captivating livebearer species admired for its deep, velvety black coloration and distinctive rounded “balloon” body shape. Its elegant look and calm nature make it one of the most sought-after freshwater fish for community aquariums.

The Black Balloon Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a selectively bred variation of the common molly, originating from the warm, slow-moving rivers and coastal streams of Central and South America. Its “balloon” body is the result of careful breeding for a short, rounded shape, giving it a distinctive, adorable appearance.

Unlike many fish that fade into the background, the Black Molly Fish stands out boldly with its jet-black scales, smooth fins, and graceful swimming style. As a livebearer species, females give birth to live fry, making them both fascinating and easy to breed in captivity.

A full-grown Black Balloon Molly typically reaches 2.5 to 3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in length. Their deep, glossy black coloration absorbs light beautifully, giving these Molly fish an elegant, mirror-like sheen. The “balloon” body type, shorter, rounder, and fuller than standard mollies, adds visual variety to community tanks.

When kept in planted aquariums or against bright backgrounds, their dark contrast enhances the color vibrancy of other fish species, making them an ideal choice for aquascaped setups.

Black Balloon Mollies are peaceful, social fish that thrive in small groups of five or more. They coexist well with other gentle, community-friendly species such as Guppies, Platies, Swordtails, Corydoras, and Tetras.

At our Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Black Balloon Molly for sale and other freshwater fish for sale are carefully selected and packed with love!
