Anubias Nana Petite Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Big Does Anubias Petite Get?

Anubias Petite, scientifically known as Anubias sp. 'Petite', is a compact aquatic plant that grows to less than 5 cm (2 inches) in height. Its small leaves emerge from a rhizome that can extend 5–10 cm or more, making it ideal for nano aquariums and detailed aquascaping. This mutation, discovered at the Oriental aquarium plant nursery in Singapore, is perfect for creating lush, low-maintenance underwater landscapes. Its petite size and slow growth rate make it a favorite for tanks with live aquarium plants.

Does Anubias Nana Petite Need CO₂?

Anubias Nana Petite thrives without CO₂, making it an excellent choice for low-tech aquariums. It grows well when its rhizome is attached to hard surfaces like driftwood or stones and requires low to medium light. While CO₂ is not essential, adding it can encourage faster growth and thicker, more vibrant leaves. Pairing CO₂ with regular fertilization enhances its appearance, especially in tanks with live aquarium plants.

What is the Difference Between Anubias Nana and Anubias Nana Petite?

The primary difference lies in the leaf size and growth habits. Anubias Nana typically has leaves about ¾ inch (1.9 cm) in diameter, even in low-light, low-CO₂ conditions. In contrast, Anubias Nana Petite features much smaller leaves, barely reaching ⅓ inch (0.8 cm) in diameter, making it more compact and ideal for nano aquariums or intricate aquascapes. Both are hardy and thrive in similar conditions, but Nana Petite is better suited for creating detailed, small-scale underwater designs with live aquarium plants.

1. Improved Ecosystem: Enhancing Water Quality and Supporting Aquatic Life

Anubias Nana Petite plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and balanced aquarium ecosystem. Like other live plants in fish tanks, it provides several ecological benefits:

  • Nutrient Absorption: It absorbs excess nutrients from the water, such as nitrates and phosphates, which helps to reduce the likelihood of algae outbreaks and maintain better water quality.

  • Biological Stability: The live plant contributes to the stability of the tank’s nitrogen cycle by harboring beneficial bacteria on its surfaces, aiding in the breakdown of waste.

2. Hiding Spots for Freshwater Fish: Providing Comfort and Security

The dense foliage and compact size of Anubias Nana Petite make it an ideal refuge for your fish, particularly shy or vulnerable species:

  • Shelter for Small Fish: Its lush leaves provide safe hiding spots for fry (baby fish) and small fish, protecting them from potential predators.

  • Comfort for Shy Species: Timid fish, such as bettas or small tetras, often seek shelter among live plants like Anubias Nana Petite to feel secure and reduce stress.

  • Support for Bottom-Dwellers: Placing this aquatic plant near the aquarium substrate can offer bottom-dwelling fish, such as corydoras and loaches, a place to rest or forage comfortably.

3. Aesthetic Versatility: Perfect for All Aquascaping Ideas

Tank Setup for Anubias Nana Petite: Tips for Optimal Growth and Appearance

Creating the ideal environment for Anubias Nana Petite ensures its health, longevity, and visual appeal in your aquarium. Here’s how to set up your tank for this hardy aquatic plant:

1. Aquarium Substrate: No Rooting Required

Anubias Nana Petite is unique in that it doesn’t need to be rooted in the aquarium substrate. Instead:

  • Attach to Hardscapes: Secure the aquatic plant to rocks, driftwood, or other aquarium decorations using aquarium-safe glue or fishing line.

  • Prevent Rhizome Rot: Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can lead to rot and damage to the aquatic plant.

  • Placement Flexibility: Position it at various heights and angles to add depth and creativity to your aquascape.

2. Water Parameters: Maintaining the Right Conditions

This live plant thrives in stable water conditions that mimic its natural habitat:

  • pH Range: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.5 and 7.5 for optimal health.

  • Temperature: Keep the water temperature in the range of 72°F-82°F (22°C-28°C), suitable for most tropical aquariums.

  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal, ensuring nutrients reach the live plant without dislodging it from its anchor.

  • Compatibility: It pairs well with tanks hosting community fish or freshwater shrimp, as these inhabitants do not harm the live plant.

3. Pairing with Other Live Aquarium Plants

For those creating live plant tanks, Anubias Nana Petite complements a wide variety of species:

  • Java Fern and Mosses: Similar care requirements make these excellent companions.

  • Foreground and Background Plants: Use Anubias Nana Petite as a foreground plant while combining it with taller species like Amazon Swords or Vallisneria for contrast.

  • Shrimp Tanks: Its durable leaves provide a great grazing surface for algae-eating shrimp.

Care Tips and Propagation for Anubias Nana Petite

Caring for Anubias Nana Petite is straightforward, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Here’s how to ensure its health and propagate it successfully:

1. Attach and Anchor

Anubias Nana Petite thrives when securely attached to hard surfaces in your tank:

  • Materials to Use: Use fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue to fasten the plant to rocks, driftwood, or other aquarium decorations.

  • Placement Options: Position it creatively in your aquascape, such as on elevated hardscapes for vertical layers or flat surfaces for carpeting effects.

  • Secure the Aquatic Plant: Ensure it is firmly anchored so it doesn’t get dislodged by water flow or fish activity.

2. Avoid Burying the Rhizome

The rhizome is the heart of Anubias Nana Petite, and proper placement is critical:

  • Above the Aquarium Substrate: Always position the rhizome above the substrate to prevent it from rotting.

  • Root Growth: The roots will naturally grow downward into the substrate or cling to hardscapes for stability.

  • Substrate-Free Setup: This aquatic plant thrives even in substrate-free tanks, making it versatile for various setups.

3. Propagate Easily

Propagating Anubias Nana Petite is simple and can help you expand your aquascape:

  • Rhizome Division: Use a sharp, sterilized tool to cut the rhizome into smaller sections, ensuring each piece has at least 2-3 healthy leaves and visible roots.

  • Reattach New Sections: Secure the new pieces to hardscapes, just as you would with the original aquatic plant.

  • Growth Timeline: Propagated sections will grow slowly, but with proper care, they will develop into healthy, full-sized plants.

Additional Care Tips

  • Cleaning: Gently clean the leaves if algae build-up occurs to maintain the plant’s appearance and health.

  • Pruning: Trim damaged or yellowing leaves to encourage new growth.

  • Compatibility: Avoid housing Anubias Nana Petite with herbivorous fish that may nibble on its leaves, such as goldfish or large cichlids.

Common Issues and Solutions for Anubias Nana Petite

Although Anubias Nana Petite is a hardy and low-maintenance plant, it can encounter a few common issues. Here’s a detailed look at these problems and how to address them effectively:

1. Algae Growth

Issue: The broad leaves of Anubias Nana Petite can become a target for algae, especially under strong or prolonged lighting.

Solutions:

  • Lighting Duration: Limit the light exposure to 6–8 hours per day to reduce algae growth. Avoid high-intensity lights directly focused on the plant.

  • Nutrient Balance: Maintain balanced nutrient levels by monitoring nitrates and phosphates. Avoid over-fertilization, which can promote algae.

  • Algae-Eating Tank Mates: Introduce algae-eating species such as Amano shrimp, Nerite snails, or Otocinclus catfish to help control algae naturally.

  • Manual Cleaning: Gently clean the leaves with a soft brush or sponge to remove algae buildup without damaging the live aquarium plant.

2. Melting Leaves

Issue: "Melting" refers to the live aquarium plant’s leaves turning translucent, wilting, and eventually falling off. This can happen due to sudden changes in water parameters or stress from a new environment.

Solutions:

  • Gradual Acclimation: When introducing the live plant to a new tank, acclimate it slowly to the water parameters to minimize stress.

  • Consistent Water Quality: Maintain stable water conditions, including a pH of 6.5–7.5 and a temperature of 72°F–82°F (22°C–28°C). Avoid sudden changes in these parameters.

  • Remove Damaged Leaves: Trim melting leaves promptly to encourage the growth of healthy new ones.

  • Nutrient Deficiency: If melting persists, consider adding a liquid fertilizer specifically designed for aquatic plants to ensure proper nutrition.

3. Root Rot

Issue: Root rot occurs when the rhizome is buried in the substrate, leading to decay and eventual death of the plant.

Solutions:

  • Proper Placement: Always position the rhizome above the substrate. Attach it to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscapes for stability.

  • Inspect Regularly: Check the rhizome periodically for signs of rot, such as a soft or discolored appearance, and remove affected sections immediately.

  • Moderate Water Flow: Ensure good water circulation around the live plant to prevent stagnant conditions that could contribute to rot.
