Salvinia Minima Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How fast does Salvinia Minima grow?

Salvinia Minima is a fast-growing floating aquarium plant that can double in size within a week under ideal conditions. With moderate to high lighting, gentle surface water flow, and access to nutrients, this floating plant quickly spreads across the water’s surface, forming a dense, green mat. In nutrient-rich or CO₂-injected aquariums, it grows even faster, helping absorb nitrates and improving overall water quality. Regular trimming or thinning is recommended to prevent excessive surface coverage that can block light from reaching submerged plants.

Why is my Salvinia Minima turning brown?

If your Salvinia Minima is turning brown, it’s often due to poor lighting, nutrient deficiency, or excessive water agitation. This Salvinia floating plant prefers calm surfaces and consistent moderate light. Strong water movement can damage the delicate floating leaves, while low light or lack of nutrients, especially iron, may cause discoloration or melting. To restore healthy growth, ensure gentle surface flow, provide adequate light exposure, and supplement with a balanced liquid aquarium fertilizer.

Is Salvinia Minima easy to care for?

Yes, Salvinia Minima is very easy to care for, making it one of the best floating plants for beginners. It does not require CO₂ or specialized lighting and thrives in a wide range of freshwater parameters. As long as it receives moderate light, minimal surface disturbance, and occasional fertilization, Water Spangles will grow beautifully and contribute to a healthy aquarium ecosystem. It’s a perfect choice for Betta fish tanks, shrimp aquariums, and low-tech planted setups.
