The Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami, also known as the Blue Dwarf Gourami or Blue Gourami Fish, is a stunning, peaceful species admired for its shimmering sky-blue body and gentle temperament. With its vibrant coloration and calm personality, the Powder Blue Gourami makes an excellent centerpiece for community and planted aquariums.
Originating from the slow-moving streams and rice paddies of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, the Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami (Trichogaster lalius) is a selectively bred color variant of the popular Dwarf Gourami. Its electric blue hue and peaceful nature make it one of the most visually captivating freshwater fish available. As a labyrinth fish, it can breathe both through its gills and by taking in air from the surface, allowing it to thrive in a range of tank conditions.
A full-grown Powder Blue Dwarf Gourami reaches about 2.5 to 3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in length. Its iridescent blue scales and flowing fins reflect beautifully under aquarium lighting, adding a tranquil glow to planted setups. Males typically display more intense coloration, while females are paler with shorter fins. Despite their small blue gourami size, their striking appearance makes them an ideal choice for peaceful community tanks.
Powder Blue Gouramis are gentle, curious, and semi-social fish that do best in calm community aquariums. They are ideal tankmates for Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, livebearers, and peaceful shrimp species. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping fish, as they prefer a quiet environment.
A Powder Blue Gourami tank should include live plants, floating vegetation, and open swimming areas. Their tranquil swimming style and inquisitive nature bring a soothing balance to the aquarium.
