The Rummy Nose Tetra (Hemigrammus Bleheri) is widely regarded as one of the best schooling fish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Instantly recognizable by its bright red nose, silver body, and bold black-and-white striped tail, the Rummynose Tetra fish creates breathtaking synchronized movement when kept in groups. Few fish display schooling behavior as tight and mesmerizing as Rummy Nose Tetras, making them a top choice for planted and aquascaped aquariums.
Native to the Amazon River Basin, these Tetra fish inhabit soft, warm, slow-moving blackwater streams rich in plants and leaf litter. Among the different rummy nose species, Hemigrammus bleheri is the most vibrant and commonly preferred due to its intense red coloration and excellent schooling behavior.
One unique trait of the Rummy Nose Tetra is that the brightness of its red nose reflects overall health and water quality, making it a natural “indicator fish” for aquarium conditions, hence their name, Red Nose Tetra or Firehead Tetra.
A full-grown Rummynose Tetra reaches about 1.75–2 inches (4.5–5 cm) in length. Their sleek, torpedo-shaped bodies are silver with a slight translucent sheen, while the face glows a vivid crimson red. The tail features crisp horizontal black and white stripes that flash as the school moves together. Their small size and striking coloration make Rummynose Tetras perfect for medium to large community aquariums and planted tanks.
Rummy Nose Tetras are extremely peaceful schooling fish and should always be kept in groups of 8–10 or more. Larger schools result in tighter formation swimming, reduced stress, and stronger coloration. Excellent Rummy Nose Tetra tank mates include: Other tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, Dwarf cichlids (Rams, Apistogramma), Gouramis, Angelfish (in large tanks), shrimp, and snails. Avoid aggressive or highly boisterous fish that may disrupt their schooling behavior.

Rummy Nose Tetra Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How many Rummy Nose Tetra should I keep in a 20-gallon tank?
In a 20-gallon tank, you should keep at least 8–10 Rummy Nose Tetras, with 10–12 being ideal. Rummy Nose Tetras are tight-schooling fish, and larger groups reduce stress while enhancing their famous synchronized swimming behavior. A 20-gallon aquarium provides enough horizontal swimming space for a healthy, visually impressive school when water quality is well maintained.
Are Rummy Nose Tetras good for beginners?
Yes, Rummy Nose Tetras can be good for beginners, especially aquarists who understand the importance of stable water conditions. While they are peaceful and hardy once established, Rummy Nose Tetras are slightly sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. Beginners who perform regular water changes and maintain proper temperature and filtration will find Rummy Nose Tetra care very manageable and rewarding.
Can I keep Rummy Nose Tetra with Betta fish?
Yes, Rummy Nose Tetras can live with Betta fish in most cases. Their peaceful temperament and fast, mid-water swimming style make them suitable Betta tank mates. To ensure compatibility, provide a tank of 20 gallons or larger, plenty of plants, and hiding spaces to reduce stress. Avoid keeping aggressive Betta individuals, and always monitor behavior during the initial introduction.
