The Purple Vampire Crab (Geosesarma sp.) is one of the most visually stunning and unique additions you can make to a freshwater aquarium or paludarium setup. With its deep purple carapace, vibrant orange eyes, and contrasting claws, this purple crab lives up to its name - mysterious, eye-catching, and full of personality. Unlike marine crabs, Purple Vampire Crabs thrive in freshwater environments, making them a rare gem for hobbyists looking to add both color and curiosity to their tank.

Native to Southeast Asia, these freshwater vampire crabs are semi-terrestrial, requiring both land and water zones in their habitat. They're relatively small (up to 2 inches across), peaceful, and easy to care for, which makes them suitable for nano tanks and species-specific enclosures. Whether you're building a bioactive terrarium or a crab-only setup, this purple crab brings a gothic charm and lively behavior to your display.

At Splashy Fish, our Purple Vampire Crabs for sale and other freshwater crabs for sale are tank-raised and acclimated to home aquarium conditions, ensuring you receive healthy, vibrant crabs with strong coloration and full activity. We ship live with care and confidence, backed by our Live Arrival Guarantee. You can also shop our wide selection of freshwater fish for sale, freshwater shrimp for sale, aquarium plants for sale, and aquarium supplies to complete your exotic setup.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS CRAB:

  • Incredible Coloration: Deep purple body with bright orange or yellow eyes - no two crabs are exactly alike!
  • Freshwater Friendly: One of the few truly freshwater crab species, ideal for paludariums or terrariums.
  • Small & Low-Maintenance: Grows up to 2 inches and thrives in nano enclosures with both land and water zones.
  • Fun Behavior: Active explorers and climbers that bring movement and intrigue to your tank.
  • Peaceful Temperament: Can be kept solo or in small groups with the proper setup.

RECOMMENDED TANK PARAMETERS:

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)
  • pH Range: 7.5 – 8.0
  • Water Type: Freshwater (low to moderate hardness)
  • Tank Size: 10+ gallons for a small group (with both land and water zones)
  • Humidity: 80%+ for paludariums
  • Lighting: Low to moderate (dim or ambient preferred)
  • Substrate: Fine sand or eco-soil with moss, wood, and rocks

CARE GUIDELINES:

  • Diet: Purple Vampire Crabs are omnivores and scavengers. Feed them a varied diet including high-quality crab pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like spinach or zucchini), bloodworms, and freeze-dried insects. Occasional protein-rich treats will keep them active and healthy.
  • Feeding Habits: These purple crabs forage mostly at night and appreciate both floating and sinking foods. Remove uneaten food to prevent mold in the land area.
  • Social Behavior: Generally peaceful but territorial, especially males. Best kept in groups of 1 male to 2–3 females in an enclosure with ample hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and fighting.
  • Habitat Setup: A paludarium is ideal, with 70% land and 30% shallow freshwater. Include cork bark, driftwood, leaf litter, and live moss for climbing and burrowing. Use a secure lid as they are expert escape artists!
  • Compatibility: Not suitable for full aquatic community tanks. If housed with other animals, use only non-aggressive, land-friendly species and ensure they can't harm or be harmed by the crabs.

Purple Vampire Crab Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a Purple Vampire Crab?

A Purple Vampire Crab is a small, freshwater crab species known for its rich purple coloration and bright eyes. It’s part of the Geosesarma genus and is native to Southeast Asia. Unlike many crabs, it doesn’t need saltwater to thrive, making it perfect for freshwater paludariums or crab setups.

Do Purple Vampire Crabs need land and water?

Yes. Purple Vampire Crabs are semi-terrestrial, which means they need both land and shallow freshwater to thrive. An ideal habitat is a paludarium setup with around 70% land and 30% water, along with high humidity, hiding spots, and climbing surfaces. Without a proper land area, they can become stressed or unhealthy.

Can Purple Vampire Crabs live with fish?

In most cases, Purple Vampire Crabs should not be kept with fish. They are known to be opportunistic hunters and may nip at slow or bottom-dwelling fish. Additionally, their need for land makes them incompatible with full aquatic tanks. It's best to house them in a species-specific paludarium or with compatible invertebrates in a partially aquatic setup.
