Scientific Name: Atyopsis moluccensis
Bamboo Shrimp Coloration
Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), or Wood Shrimp, are known for their warm earthy tones, ranging from reddish-brown to tan with subtle striping. Their coloration often adapts slightly to their surroundings, blending beautifully into natural aquascapes. With their feather-like filter fans extended, they bring constant, graceful movement to the tank.
Bamboo Shrimp Size
When fully grown, Bamboo Shrimp size typically ranges from 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm), making them one of the largest freshwater shrimp available to aquarists. Their larger size compared to dwarf shrimp makes them a striking centerpiece in community aquariums.
Bamboo Shrimp Behavior
Bamboo Shrimp are peaceful, non-aggressive, and fascinating to observe. Instead of scavenging along the substrate like many shrimp, they perch on rocks, driftwood, or aquatic plants in areas with good water flow to catch suspended food. Their unique feeding behavior adds natural balance to your bamboo shrimp aquarium and makes them stand out among freshwater invertebrates.
Bamboo Shrimp Care Requirements
Caring for bamboo shrimp is relatively simple with the right setup:
- Provide a strong but gentle water flow so they can filter feed effectively.
- Offer plenty of perching spots such as driftwood, aquarium rocks, and plants.
- Use a mature, well-established aquarium to ensure a constant supply of micro-particles in the water.
Because they are more sensitive to sudden changes than Neocaridina shrimp, proper acclimation is essential when introducing them to a new tank.
Bamboo Shrimp Compatibility
Bamboo shrimp tank mates should be peaceful and non-aggressive. Good companions include:
- Small community fish: Tetras, Rasboras, Guppies
- Dwarf shrimp: Neocaridina, Caridina species
- Freshwater snails: Nerite Snails, Mystery Snails
Avoid predatory or fin-nipping species like large cichlids or bettas that may harass or injure them.
Bamboo Shrimp Diet
As filter feeders, bamboo shrimp require suspended food in the water column. In addition to natural particles in a mature tank, supplement their diet with:
- Powdered shrimp foods or micro-pellets
- Crushed algae wafers
- Liquid fry food or powdered spirulina
- Occasionally, target-feed with a turkey baster near their perch
Avoid overfeeding, but ensure enough fine particles remain in the flow to keep them nourished.
Bamboo Shrimp Recommended Tank Parameters
To keep your bambo shrimp healthy and active, maintain the following water conditions:
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons (larger tanks provide more stable food sources)
- Temperature: 72°–82°F (22°–28°C) – optimal bamboo shrimp temperature
- pH: 6.5–7.5
- GH: 4–8 dGH
- KH: 2–6 dKH
- Flow: Moderate to strong, to allow effective filter feeding

Bamboo Shrimp Frequently Asked Questions
Are Bamboo Shrimp good for beginners?
Bamboo Shrimp are generally not recommended for complete beginners because their feeding habits can be challenging to manage. Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders that rely on tiny particles floating in the water column. This means they require a mature, well-established aquarium with strong water flow to deliver food to their fan-like appendages.
What is the Bamboo shrimp lifespan?
On average, Bamboo Shrimp live 2–3 years in captivity when provided with the right conditions. Stable water parameters, a well-cycled tank, and a consistent supply of micro-foods such as powdered shrimp foods or crushed algae wafers all contribute to their longevity. Stress from poor water quality, insufficient food, or improper acclimation can shorten their lifespan significantly.
Do Bamboo shrimp like plants?
Yes, Bamboo Shrimp thrive in planted aquariums. Live aquatic plants provide natural perching spots where Bamboo Shrimp can spread their fan-like arms into the current to catch food. Plants also improve water quality by reducing nitrates and encouraging biofilm growth, which benefits all freshwater shrimp species. A heavily planted tank not only makes Bamboo Shrimp feel secure but also enhances the overall ecosystem, supporting their natural behaviors and reducing stress.
