Moneywort (Bacopa monnieri) is a hardy, bright green freshwater plant known for its vertical growth and lush, round leaves. This popular stem plant adds a fresh, vibrant look to any aquascape while providing excellent cover and oxygenation for fish and shrimp. Its neat, upright stems grow steadily toward the surface, making it perfect for background or midground planting in aquariums of all sizes.

Native to wetlands in Asia and the Americas, Bacopa monnieri is incredibly adaptable and thrives in a wide range of water conditions. It’s ideal for both low-tech and high-tech aquariums, making it a favorite among both beginners and experienced aquascapers. In addition to aquariums, Moneywort can also grow emersed in paludariums, adding natural greenery above the waterline.

  • Can grow submerged or emersed: Perfect for aquariums, terrariums, and paludariums.

How to Plant Moneywort Plant in Your Aquarium

  1. Rinse the plant gently to remove any gel or debris before planting.
  2. Trim the lower leaves and plant individual stems 1–2 inches into the substrate.
  3. Space stems slightly apart to allow proper light and water circulation.
  4. Provide moderate lighting for upright, compact growth.
  5. Trim regularly and replant cuttings to create dense, bushy clusters.

Moneywort Plant Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can Moneywort plant grow floating?

Yes, Moneywort can grow as a floating aquarium plant. When left to float, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column and continues to grow healthy stems and leaves. Floating Moneywort plants provide excellent shade, help reduce algae growth, and create a natural hiding area for small fish and shrimp.

How big does Moneywort plant get?

In aquariums, Moneywort plants typically reach 12 to 20 inches (30–50 cm) in height, depending on lighting, nutrients, and water conditions. Under moderate to high lighting, Bacopa monnieri grows upright with closely spaced, bright green leaves.

Does Moneywort grow fast?

Yes, Moneywort is considered a fast-growing aquarium plant. Under proper lighting and nutrient-rich conditions, it can grow several inches per week, making it excellent for controlling algae and improving water quality. Its quick growth also makes it easy to propagate by simply trimming healthy stems and replanting them into the substrate.
