Subwassertang (Lomariopsis lineata) or Süsswassertang is a unique and highly versatile freshwater aquarium plant prized for its soft, branching green fronds that resemble moss or seaweed. Despite often being called Subwassertang moss, it is actually a form of freshwater fern gametophyte. Its delicate texture and natural flowing appearance make it a favorite among aquascapers looking to add organic detail and lush greenery to planted aquariums.

This hardy Subwassertang aquarium plant thrives in a wide range of conditions and is extremely easy to care for, making it perfect for beginners. It can be used as a floating plant, attached to rocks or driftwood, or placed loosely in the aquarium to create natural hiding areas. Because of its dense structure, Subwassertang is especially popular in shrimp tanks and breeding tanks where fry need safe shelter.

At our Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Subwassertang for sale and other aquarium plants are carefully selected and packed with love! Visit us to buy them online or at our aquarium store in Virginia for a wide selection of freshwater fish, betta fish, freshwater shrimp, and aquarium supplies.

Why Choose Subwassertang?

  • Unique moss-like appearance: Adds natural texture and movement to aquascapes.
  • Extremely easy to grow: Perfect for beginners and low-tech aquariums.
  • Versatile placement: Can float freely or be attached to hardscape.
  • Low light tolerant: Thrives even in shaded areas of the tank.
  • Ideal for shrimp and fry: Dense growth provides natural hiding spots.
  • Low maintenance plant: Requires minimal trimming and care.

How to Plant Subwassertang in Your Aquarium

  1. Rinse the Subwassertang plant gently before adding it to your tank.
  2. Place it loosely in the aquarium, or attach it to rocks, driftwood, or decorations.
  3. It can also be left floating to create a natural moss-like cluster.
  4. Provide gentle water flow to keep the plant clean and healthy.
  5. Trim occasionally to maintain the desired shape and density.

Tip: Subwassertang grows slowly but steadily. Spreading small portions around the tank can create multiple lush clusters over time.
