The Banded Rainbowfish (scientific name: Melanotaenia trifasciata) is a captivating rainbow fish species featuring iridescent blue, yellow, red, and green tones, highlighted by a bold horizontal stripe. Adult males are especially breathtaking, developing elongated fins and even more vivid colors during spawning displays. This freshwater fish thrives in community tanks and is perfect for aquarists looking to add dynamic schooling action and visual appeal to their setup.
Banded Rainbowfish can grow up to 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in the aquarium. Their deep bodies, arching backs, and signature dark lateral band distinguish them from other Melanotaenia species. When kept in a group, their schooling behavior and color changes provide a constantly shifting display of beauty.
Known for their peaceful and active nature, Banded Rainbowfish are best kept in groups of six or more to encourage natural social interactions and vibrant coloration. They are excellent community fish, coexisting well with other peaceful species such as Tetras, Barbs, Danios, Corydoras, and even many types of shrimp and snails. Their energetic swimming and non-aggressive temperament make them a highlight in planted and open-swimming tanks.
