Add a splash of royal blue elegance to your aquarium with the Blue Orchid Cichlid (Aulonocara kandeense), also known as the Kande Island Peacock. Native to the clear, mineral-rich waters of Lake Malawi, this striking cichlid is prized for its vibrant electric blue body and graceful swimming behavior. Males develop intense coloration with dark vertical bars and metallic hues that shimmer under aquarium lighting, making them true showpieces in any setup.

Blue Orchid Cichlids are part of the Peacock Cichlid family (Aulonocara spp.), known for their relatively peaceful temperament compared to other African cichlids. They thrive in well-maintained tanks with hard, alkaline water, sandy substrate, and plenty of rocks and caves to establish territories. These cichlids are ideal for community tanks with other Lake Malawi species of similar size and temperament.

Whether you're building a colorful African cichlid tank or adding a bold centerpiece to your collection, the Blue Orchid Cichlid offers beauty, personality, and ease of care for intermediate to advanced hobbyists.

At Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Blue Orchid Cichlids for sale and other Peacock Cichlid Fish for sale are tank-bred, grown, and sold with love and care. Visit our fish store online or aquarium in Virginia for more high-quality freshwater fish for sale. We have a lot more fish available for sale, such as betta fish for saleaquatic plants for sale, freshwater shrimp for sale, freshwater snails for sale, and other aquarium supplies.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS FISH:

  • Breathtaking Blue Coloration: Male Blue Orchid Cichlids develop intense, electric blue bodies with dark vertical bars, a stunning visual contrast, especially under proper aquarium lighting. They're one of the most vibrant of all Peacock cichlids and often become the highlight of any tank.
  • Peaceful (for a Cichlid): Compared to other Lake Malawi cichlids, they are relatively peaceful. While males can be territorial during breeding, they are generally compatible with other Peacocks and Haps in a well-sized tank with proper space and hiding spots.
  • Active and Curious Swimmers: Blue Orchid Cichlids are inquisitive and active, often exploring caves or gliding through open spaces. They’re known to be interactive and may even recognize their keepers during feeding time.
  • Adaptable but Need Stable Water: They thrive in hard, alkaline water with good filtration and steady conditions. Stability is key - fluctuating pH or temperature can cause stress or dull their color.

RECOMMENDED TANK PARAMETERS:

  • Temperature: 75 - 82°F (24 - 28°C)
  • pH Range: 7.8 - 8.6
  • Hardness: 10 - 20 dGH (hard water)
  • Tank Size: 55 gallons minimum. Larger tanks help reduce aggression and give room for swimming.
  • Lighting: Moderate to Bright
  • Filtration: Strong, high-quality filtration system. These fish produce waste - use a canister or HOB filter with good flow.

CARE GUIDELINES:

  • Diet: Blue Orchid Cichlids are omnivores and need a well-balanced diet to maintain their vibrant blue color and overall health. Some recommended fish foods include high-quality flakes or pellets, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
  • Feeding habits: Feed 1–2 times daily, offering only what they can finish within 2–3 minutes. They feed mostly in the middle to bottom levels of the tank
  • Social behavior: Blue Orchid Cichlids are semi-aggressive but relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids. Males can be territorial, especially during breeding, so provide plenty of rocks and hiding spots
  • Origin: Native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, specifically found around rocky habitats and sandy lake bottoms. They inhabit rocky shorelines and open sandy areas, thriving in hard, alkaline water with stable conditions
  • Average adult size: Typically grow between 4–6 inches (10–15 cm), Males are usually larger and much more colorful than females
