Tiger Nerite Snails (Neritina semiconica) are a top choice among aquarists for their eye-catching shell patterns and unmatched algae-cleaning abilities. Native to the brackish and freshwater environments of Southeast Asia, these small but mighty freshwater snails feature a golden to amber shell covered in vivid black tiger-like stripes. They grow up to 1 inch and thrive in planted aquariums, nano tanks, and peaceful community setups. Constant grazers by nature, Tiger Nerite Snails are algae-eating machines—cleaning glass, hardscape, and plant leaves without disturbing tank mates or live plants.
Why Should You Choose Tiger Nerite Snails?
Tiger Nerite Snails are an ideal solution for aquarists who want to control algae growth naturally and safely. Their tiger-striped shells add aesthetic appeal, while their hardiness, peaceful nature, and non-breeding behavior in freshwater make them an efficient and hassle-free member of your aquarium cleanup crew. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced hobbyist, these snails are the perfect algae-control partner.
Top Benefits:
- Beautiful tiger-striped shell pattern
- Powerful algae control without harming plants
- Will not breed in freshwater—no overpopulation
- Great for nano tanks, planted tanks, and shrimp aquariums
- Easy to care for and very peaceful
Recommended Tank Parameters
- Tank Size: 5 gallons or larger
- pH: 7.0 – 8.4
- Temperature: 72 – 78°F (22 – 26°C)
- Water Hardness: Moderate to hard
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: < 40 ppm
- Water Type: Freshwater or brackish
- Substrate: Any (fine gravel or sand preferred)
Keep your tank securely covered with a tight-fitting lid, as Nerites—including Tiger Nerites—may climb out during exploration.
Tiger Nerite Snails Breeding
Tiger Nerite Snails do not reproduce in freshwater. While they may lay small white eggs on tank décor, these eggs will not hatch unless transferred to brackish water. This makes them a worry-free addition to your tank—no risk of overpopulation like with other snail species.
Tiger Nerite Snails Tank Compatibility
Tiger Nerites are gentle, peaceful, and suitable for tanks with:
- Freshwater shrimp such as Red Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, or Blue Dream Shrimp
- Community fish like Fancy Guppies, Rasboras, and Tetras fish
- Bottom dwellers like Corydoras and Otocinclus
- Other nerite snails or peaceful snail species
Avoid aggressive or predatory fish like Puffers, Loaches, or large Cichlids that may harm snails.
Tiger Nerite Snails Diet
Tiger Nerite Snails are natural algae grazers, feeding on:
- Soft green algae
- Diatoms and biofilm
- Algae on tank glass, rocks, and driftwood
If your tank is too clean, supplement with:
- Algae wafers
- Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)
- Calcium-rich snail food to support shell growth
