The Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is a stunning freshwater fish that captivates aquarists with its shimmering green-blue iridescence and peaceful nature. Closely related to the Cardinal Tetra and the Neon Tetra, this species is smaller and displays a more vibrant green hue, making it a striking choice for planted aquariums.
Characterized by its glowing green-blue stripe, the Green Neon Tetra fish stands out under subdued lighting. Growing up to 1 inch in length, this Tetra fish is ideal for nano aquariums and community tanks alike. Their compact size and social behavior make them a favorite among aquarists who want an active, colorful display.
In the wild, Green Neon Tetras are found in the blackwater streams of the Amazon Basin, where the water is soft, acidic, and rich in tannins. To mimic their natural environment, a tank with driftwood, live plants, and leaf litter is highly recommended. A dark substrate and dim lighting further enhance their vibrant coloration, making them stand out beautifully.
Due to their gentle and social nature, Green Neon Tetras thrive in groups of six or more and should be housed with other peaceful fish. Ideal tankmates include Ember Tetras, Chili Rasboras, Cory catfish, Otocinclus, and Neocaridina shrimp. Avoid large or aggressive species that may intimidate or outcompete them for food.

Green Neon Tetras Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can Green Neon Tetra live with Betta fish?
Yes, Green Neon Tetras can live with Betta fish, but compatibility depends on the temperament of the Betta. Since Green Neon Tetras are small, peaceful schooling fish, they typically do well in a community tank with non-aggressive Bettas. To ensure a harmonious environment, follow these guidelines:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 10-20 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space.
- Group Size: Keep at least six Green Neon Tetras together to prevent fin-nipping or stress.
- Tank Setup: Add plenty of live plants, driftwood, and hiding spots to reduce territorial disputes.
- Feeding Strategy: Ensure both species receive adequate food by offering a variety of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live/frozen foods.
While Green Neon Tetras and Bettas can coexist, always monitor their behavior closely. If aggression occurs, consider a tank divider or alternative tankmates.
Are Green Neon Tetra aggressive?
No, Green Neon Tetras are not aggressive. They are peaceful, schooling fish that thrive in groups of six or more. However, like many small tetras, they may show occasional fin-nipping behavior if kept in small numbers or if tank conditions are inadequate.
How often should I feed Green Neon Tetra?
Feed Green Neon Tetras once or twice a day with a balanced diet to keep them healthy and vibrant. Offer only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain excellent water quality. Occasional fasting (once a week) can also help prevent bloating and digestive issues.
