The Microspider Crab (scientific name: Limnopilos naiyanetri) is a captivating addition to any aquarium, known for its intricate appearance and fascinating behavior. Originating from freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, the Microspider Crab available in the aquarium trade are often captive-bred, ensuring their availability and adaptability to aquarium conditions.

Characterized by their tiny size and spider-like appearance, Micro Crabs typically measure only a few centimeters across, featuring delicate legs and a distinctive carapace. Setting up an aquarium for these freshwater crabs requires consideration of their habitat preferences. A well-planted aquarium with hiding spots and smooth surfaces is ideal to provide a suitable environment for their exploration and scavenging behavior.

In their natural habitat, Microspider Crabs inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters with plenty of vegetation. Replicating these conditions in the aquarium setting with live plants and gentle filtration promotes their well-being. Additionally, ensure the tank has a secure lid to prevent potential escapes, as these crabs may attempt to climb out.

Despite their small size, Microspider Crabs can exhibit territorial behavior, especially when housed with conspecifics or similarly-sized tankmates. Therefore, it's advisable to provide adequate space and hiding spots to minimize potential conflicts.

At Splashy Fish, our Thai Mirco Crabs for sale and other freshwater crabs for sale are tank-raised and acclimated to home aquarium conditions, ensuring you receive healthy, vibrant crabs with strong coloration and full activity. Thai Micro Crabs Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Thai Micro Crab lifespan?

The Thai Micro Crab lifespan typically ranges from 1.5 to 2 years in a well-maintained aquarium. While they are small and delicate, these crabs can thrive longer when kept in stable water conditions with consistent temperatures between 72°–80°F (22°–27°C). A gentle filter, soft substrate, and plenty of hiding spaces, like moss, plants, and driftwood, help reduce stress and extend their lifespan. Providing a balanced diet of biofilm, algae wafers, and powdered shrimp food also supports their long-term health.

What is the biggest Thai Micro Crab size?

A full-grown Thai Micro Crab reaches about 0.4 inches (1 cm) in body size, with leg spans extending up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) across. They are one of the smallest freshwater crabs in the aquarium hobby, making them perfect for nano tanks and planted aquariums. Their tiny size allows them to explore fine leaves, roots, and crevices where they graze on biofilm and leftover food, keeping the tank naturally clean.

Can I keep Thai Micro Crab with Betta fish?

Yes, you can keep Thai Micro Crabs with Betta fish, but it requires careful setup. Since Thai Micro Crabs are peaceful, slow-moving, and nocturnal, they should be housed with a calm Betta in a tank with plenty of plants, moss, and hiding spaces. Bettas that are overly territorial or fin-nippers may harass them, so choose a docile Betta variety and ensure each crab has safe shelter. The two species generally coexist peacefully in a well-structured planted aquarium.
