This undemanding plant thrives in most aquarium environments, but it flourishes with proper lighting, a nutrient-rich substrate, and iron supplementation. Using an iron-rich substrate or a liquid iron fertilizer will enhance its red coloration and promote larger, healthier growth.
- Minimum Lighting: Moderate
- Temperature Range: 70–82°F
- Placement: Midground or Background
The Red Melon Sword makes an excellent focal point in aquascaping and can hide aquarium equipment like heaters or filters. Its broad leaves provide shelter for fish to swim through, and species like Discus Fish and Angelfish may even use them for egg-laying.

Red Melon Sword Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How Tall Do Red Melon Swords Get?
Red Melon Swords can grow up to 20 inches in height under ideal conditions, such as proper aquarium lighting and water quality. As part of the Rosette plant group, their leaves grow upward from a short stem base, making them an excellent choice for creating dramatic vertical accents in your aquarium.
How to plant Red Melon Sword?
To plant a Red Melon Sword, gently dig a hole in the substrate with your fingers or use planting tweezers to bury the roots securely. Ensure the crown—the base where the leaves emerge—remains above the substrate to prevent rot. With proper placement, this vibrant plant will thrive and enhance your aquarium's beauty.
What temperature should a Red Melon Sword be?
The ideal temperature for a Red Melon Sword in an aquarium is 70–82°F, as it thrives in tropical freshwater environments. While the plant is hardy, it is not suited for extreme cold in aquariums, so maintaining stable, warm water is essential for its health and vibrant growth.
