Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Coloration

The Bloody Mary Cherry Shrimp is a selectively bred, high-quality variant of the regular Cherry Shrimp. Through generations of careful culling, these freshwater shrimp have been developed for their deep, rich red coloration. Their vibrant hue makes them one of the most sought-after choices for freshwater shrimp enthusiasts. Bloody Mary Shrimp are graded based on their color intensity, with the most opaque and full-coverage red shrimp being the most desirable. The grading system includes:

  • Sakura: Mostly red body with some spots or stripes, especially in the lower body and legs.
  • Fire Red Low Grade: Almost completely red body and legs with minor translucency or orange hues.
  • Bloody Mary High Grade: Fully red with no cracks or holes, slightly translucent red or dark orange appearance.
  • Painted Fire Red: Solid, dark red coloration throughout the body and legs with no translucency.

Sexing higher-grade Fire Red Shrimp can be challenging, as both males and females may be completely red. Typically, males are lighter in color, while females are larger with a "saddle" shape on their upper body, where they store eggs before fertilization.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Size

Bloody Mary Shrimp are small, typically growing to about 1-1.2 inches in length when fully mature. Males are generally smaller than females, and females also develop a larger, more rounded tail structure to accommodate eggs.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Behavior

These Neocaridina shrimp are peaceful and highly active, making them a great addition to community tanks. They spend much of their time scavenging, and feeding on biofilm, algae, and leftover food. Their bright red coloration creates a striking visual effect, especially when placed against dark substrates. They are social creatures and thrive best in groups, where they exhibit natural behaviors such as grazing and exploring.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Care Requirements

Bloody Mary Shrimp are hardy and adaptable, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. However, they thrive best when kept within ideal parameters, including a temperature range of 65°-80°F, a pH between 7.0-7.5, and soft to hard water conditions as long as extreme fluctuations are avoided. Proper acclimation is crucial when introducing them to a new tank, as sudden changes in temperature or acidity can be stressful. Their lifespan averages around 1.5 to 2 years with good care.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Compatibility

Neocaridina shrimp, including the Bloody Mary variety, are generally peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive freshwater fish and shrimp species. They can tolerate a broad range of water conditions, making them ideal for community tanks. However, they should not be kept with large or aggressive fish that may see them as food. Providing hiding spots, such as aquatic plants and caves, ensures their safety and encourages natural breeding behaviors.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Diet

Bloody Mary Shrimp are scavengers and will naturally consume biofilm and algae in a well-established tank. In planted aquariums, they may survive primarily on these natural food sources. However, if additional supplementation is needed, they will accept algae wafers, blanched vegetables such as zucchini and spinach, and specialized shrimp pellet food. Overfeeding should be avoided, as uneaten food can negatively impact water quality. Feeding once per day is typically sufficient, and if shrimp food remains uneaten for more than a day, the feeding frequency should be reduced. Molted shrimp shells should be left in the tank, as shrimp will consume them for extra minerals like calcium, which supports healthy growth and molting.

Bloody Mary Red Shrimp Recommended Tank Parameters

  • Temperature: 65° - 80° F (18° - 26° C)
