Best known for the males’ vibrant iridescent display of pinks, purples, and electric blues during the breeding season, this freshwater fish brings unmatched color and energy to cool water and planted aquariums.
Highly adaptable and outgoing, Rainbow Shiners are perfect for room temperature or subtropical setups. They thrive in planted aquariums and do well in groups of 6 to 10 or more, showing their best schooling behavior and coloration in larger numbers. With a peaceful temperament and active nature, they make ideal tankmates for ornamental shrimp, hillstream loaches, Stiphodon gobies, and other small, non-aggressive species.
Rainbow Shiners are typically found swimming in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium, but will also forage near the substrate. They are neither aggressive nor overly shy, making them a favorite among aquarists who enjoy fish with personality and color.

Rainbow Shiner Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are Rainbow Shiners aggressive?
No, Rainbow Shiners are peaceful and sociable fish, making them an excellent choice for community aquariums. They thrive in schools and get along well with other non-aggressive species that share similar water conditions. Their calm nature and active swimming behavior make them both captivating and compatible tankmates.
Are Rainbow Shiners easy to keep?
Yes, Rainbow Shiners are fairly easy to care for, making them a great option for intermediate and even beginner hobbyists. They are peaceful schooling fish that do well with similar-sized, non-aggressive tankmates like White Cloud Mountain Minnows and small Danios. These fish thrive in unheated, well-oxygenated aquariums and require a varied omnivorous diet for optimal health and coloration.
Will Rainbow Shiners eat shrimp?
Rainbow Shiners are generally peaceful and shrimp-safe, especially with larger ornamental shrimp. However, like most fish, they may prey on tiny shrimp fry if given the opportunity. For the best results, provide plenty of plants and hiding spots to help baby shrimp survive in a shared aquarium.
