Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides), often called HC Cuba, is one of the most sought-after aquarium carpet plants in aquascaping. Famous for its tiny, bright green leaves and ultra-dense growth, this plant creates a lush, velvety carpet that transforms aquariums into breathtaking underwater landscapes.

Native to Cuba, Dwarf Baby Tears is a premium foreground aquarium plant commonly used in professional aquascapes, including Iwagumi and Nature-style layouts. When provided with proper lighting and CO₂, it spreads quickly across the substrate, forming a low, compact carpet that adds depth, scale, and realism to freshwater tanks.

At our Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Dwarf Baby Tears and other aquarium plants are carefully selected and packed with love! Visit us to buy them online or at our aquarium store in Virginia for a wide selection of freshwater fish for sale, betta fish for sale, freshwater shrimp for sale, and aquarium supplies.

Why Choose Dwarf Baby Tears?

  • Ultra-fine leaf texture: Creates one of the densest aquarium carpets available.
  • Classic aquascaping plant: A staple in professional and competition layouts.
  • Intense green coloration: Bright, vibrant green under strong lighting.
  • Perfect foreground coverage: Keeps aquascapes clean, balanced, and natural.
  • Shrimp & fish safe: Ideal for shrimp tanks and peaceful community aquariums.
  • Exceptional visual depth: Makes aquariums appear larger and more natural.

How to Plant Dwarf Baby Tears in Your Aquarium

  1. Rinse the plant gently to remove gel or debris before planting.
  2. Separate into very small portions (about ½ inch wide).
  3. Use aquascaping tweezers to plant each clump slightly into the substrate.
  4. Space portions evenly to encourage full carpet coverage.
  5. Maintain stable CO₂ and lighting for the fastest horizontal growth.

Tip: Smaller planting portions result in faster, more even carpeting and prevent plant lifting.

How to Care for Dwarf Baby Tears

  • pH: 5.5 – 7.5
  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • Lighting: High (40–60 PAR). Strong light is essential for compact growth
  • CO₂: Highly recommended to ensure dense, low-growing carpet formation
  • Fertilization: Requires consistent liquid fertilizers and nutrient-rich substrate
  • Placement: Foreground/carpet area in planted aquariums

Dwarf Baby Tears Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are Dwarf Baby Tears good for beginners?

Dwarf Baby Tears are not ideal for absolute beginners, but they are manageable for hobbyists with basic planted-tank experience. This aquarium carpet plant requires high lighting, stable CO₂ levels, and consistent fertilization to thrive. Without these conditions, growth may be slow or uneven. That said, beginners who run a CO₂ system and maintain stable water parameters can successfully grow HC Cuba and achieve a professional-looking carpet with proper care.

How tall do Dwarf Baby Tears get?

Dwarf Baby Tears stay very short, typically growing only 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) tall. This low profile is what makes Hemianthus callitrichoides one of the best foreground aquarium plants available. With strong lighting and CO₂, the plant grows horizontally rather than vertically, forming a dense, flat carpet that keeps aquascapes clean, open, and visually balanced.

Do Dwarf Baby Tears spread?

Yes, Dwarf Baby Tears spread naturally by sending out runners across the substrate. Under optimal conditions, this aquarium carpet plant spreads quickly and evenly, filling in bare areas to create a continuous green carpet. Regular trimming encourages denser horizontal growth and prevents the plant from growing upward or becoming uneven.
