Tiger Lotus (scientific name: Nymphaea zenkeri) is really worth your try as it stuns your aquarium with its pop coloration beside its hardiness and phenomenal fast-growing rate.
Under favourable conditions (moderate to high light with warm water), the plant can reach the desired size of 7-31 inches (around 18-78 cm) high and 9-23 inches (around 23-58 cm) wide. Such dimensions make Tiger Lotus ideal for midground to background positions of aquariums. More interestingly, Tiger Lotus has two kinds of leaf structure. Under submerged conditions, its leaves will resemble a heart shape and grow near its bulb. While growing emersed, they are kind of lily pads floating on the surface of the water. Not only that, the plant is also famous for its color patterns which, easily and mostly seen in the aquarium trade, are green leaves with red variegation or red leaves with darker, reddish-purple stripes.
Tiger Lotus is an easy-to-grow and easy-to-care-for species. To plant them, you only need to place their bulbs gently on the top of the substrate and let their roots self-established. If you notice the bulb floating, wait for them to sink or place them loosely under a piece of hardscape to keep it weighed down. In wild habitats, Tiger Lotus is found in slow to stagnant water with relatively shallow depths. Hence, they will appreciate it if you keep them in a home aquarium sharing similar conditions.
Tiger Lotus is sometimes reported to release a dangerous chemical that inhibits the growth of other plants. Therefore, you should be careful when planting it with other species (especially sensitive plants).
