The long, narrow body shape of the Siamese Algae Eater (scientific name: Crossocheilus siamensis) with one black stripe spread from head to tail is not the only feature that makes aquarists fall for this fish. Siamese Algae Eater, like its name, can help you clear almost any annoying algae emerging in your aquarium, from the easy to even the tough, pesky black beard algae.

The Siamese Algae Eater is an amazing species with numerous fascinating behaviors. Well-known for its active nature, it is not strange if you occasionally notice a Siamese Algae Eater jump high. As such, and to prevent them from escaping your aquarium, you should cover it well with a lid while keeping these species. Apart from that, the Siamese Algae Eater is quite peaceful on most occasions. It can get along well with most larger shrimp, such as Amano, Flower, Green Lace, and Vampire Shrimp. Nevertheless, it may easily show aggression toward dwarf shrimp and other very small invertebrates or those sharing a similar appearance.

Siamese Algae Eater prefers being kept singly or in a group of no less than six. Doing so will help avoid harassment of subdominant specimens. Providing the Siamese Algae Eater with enough space is also another helpful way to minimize its aggression.

Siamese Algae Eater almost has no special requirements when it comes to water conditions. It is easy-going and able to tolerate a wide range of parameters as long as they are stable. The same is applied in terms of food. Siamese Algae Eater is not a picky eater, and it easily accepts various types of food (but prefers those that are rich in vegetable matter).

At our Splashy Fish tropical fish store, our Siamese Algae Eaters for sale and other freshwater fish for sale are carefully selected and packed with love! Siamese Algae Eater Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are Siamese Algae Eater hard to keep?

Siamese Algae Eaters are easy to keep and well-suited for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They are hardy, adaptable, and thrive in a wide range of water conditions. Provide them with a well-maintained tank, stable water parameters, and a varied diet that includes algae wafers and fresh vegetables for long-term health.

Why are my Siamese Algae Eaters fighting?

Siamese Algae Eaters may fight due to territorial disputes, overcrowding, or lack of hiding spots. These fish can be territorial, especially as they mature. Ensure your aquarium is spacious, provide plenty of hiding places, and maintain a group size of at least five to reduce aggression and encourage natural schooling behavior.

Can I keep Siamese Algae Eater with Betta fish?

Yes, you can usually keep Siamese Algae Eaters with Betta fish, as both species are generally peaceful. Ensure your tank is large enough, has lots of plants and hiding places, and monitor their interactions closely at first. Occasionally, individual bettas may show aggression, so always observe tank dynamics and separate if any bullying occurs.

Siamese Algae Eater

The fish we bought is growing fast and seems very happy. I left him a cucumber slice, which my other fish never went for, but the SAE loves it. I've seen it eating lots of the algae that grows on my plant leaves, which is great, because my bristlenose doesn't really do much with that.
