Pure Red Line Caridina Shrimp (for short PRL shrimp) is a variant of Caridina Cantonensis freshwater shrimp, also called bee shrimp. PRL Shrimp is widely known for its outstanding appearance of solid white and red to brick red coloration which, subject to grading levels, are allocated differently.
PRL freshwater shrimp is pretty demanding and requires the care of experienced aquarists. Mostly found in the rivers of southern China, and Taiwan, PRL shrimp prefers soft and slightly acidic water with a temperature never above 78°F (around 26°C). Not as hardy as other freshwater shrimps, PRL shrimp need clean water to survive, especially when it comes to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and copper issues. Ensure you always keep the levels under control and never let copper find its way into your shrimp community. You can consider placing some live aquatic plants (e.g., java moss) in the tank to achieve the goal as they are well known for improving water quality. Furthermore, they are able to provide a lot of shelters for your Caridina shrimp which is very important considering PRL‘s size and peaceful temperament. Possessing an average adult dimension of only up to 1 inch, PRL shrimp easily become prey animals to other bigger species. That means they will feel more comfortable and secure in a tank with lots of hiding places. Adding some decorations such as rock caves, and driftwood will create that desired ‘escape room’ for your shrimp.
PRL shrimp like to stay in groups. Generally, you should raise them in a colony of around 10 to 20 specimens as this encourages them to be more active. If you don’t want to keep the shrimp alone, you can let them live with other fishes or invertebrates that are comparable in size and temperament.
The PRL shrimp grade for sale at Splashy Fish Store is A Grade as you can see in our product pictures. Besides Pure Red Line Shrimp for sale, we also offer other species of Caridina shrimp for sale and Neocaridina shrimp for sale. Visit Splashy Fish tropical fish store to buy freshwater shrimp online or at our aquarium store in Virginia for other freshwater fish for sale, live aquatic plants for sale, and aquarium supplies.

Pure Red Line Shrimp’s Natural Habitat
Pure Red Line shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) originate from wild Caridina species found in Southeast Asia's freshwater streams, particularly in Taiwan. These shrimp inhabit shallow, slow-moving streams with clear, soft, and slightly acidic water. The natural environment features leaf litter, moss, and dense vegetation, which help maintain water quality and provide a continuous supply of food like biofilm and algae.
Understanding the natural habitat of PRL shrimp helps aquarists replicate similar conditions in captivity. In their natural setting, water temperatures typically range from 68°F to 74°F (20°C to 23°C), with pH levels between 5.5 and 6.8. Mimicking these conditions in your tank will ensure a healthier and more vibrant Pure Red Line shrimp colony.
By understanding their natural preferences, you can better decide on the tank setup and environmental adjustments required to keep your PRL shrimp thriving.
Understanding the Care Requirements of Pure Red Line Shrimp
Setting up the Ideal Tank for Pure Red Line Shrimp
Tank Size
When setting up a tank for Pure Red Line shrimp, the right choice of equipment and materials is crucial. A 10-gallon tank is the minimum size recommended for beginners, while experienced aquarists may opt for 20-gallon setups for increased stability.
Substrate Selection
Use a shrimp-specific substrate like Aqua Soil Feast from 2Hr Aquarist, which buffers the pH to slightly acidic levels. This type of aquarium substrate not only helps maintain a stable pH but also supports plant growth, creating a natural habitat for the freshwater shrimp.
Filtration
A sponge filter is ideal for PRL shrimp tanks because it provides gentle filtration without creating strong currents. The sponge filter also offers additional surfaces for biofilm, a natural food source.
Lighting
Moderate lighting is sufficient, as too much aquarium light can lead to excessive algae growth and stress the shrimp. Aim for 6-8 hours of light per day.
Heater and Temperature Control
Use a reliable aquarium heater with a thermostat to maintain consistent temperatures between 68°F and 74°F (20°C to 23°C). Sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the aquarium shrimp and impact their immune system.
Invest in a good quality thermometer and pH meter to monitor tank conditions closely. Stability is the key to keeping Pure Red Line shrimp healthy.
Maintaining Water Parameters for Pure Red Line Shrimp
Maintaining consistent water parameters is one of the most critical aspects of Pure Red Line shrimp care. Unlike more resilient Neocaridina shrimp, PRL shrimp require specific conditions to thrive.
- pH Levels: Aim for a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Pure Red Line shrimp thrive in slightly acidic environments, which also help maintain their vibrant red coloration.
- Temperature: Keep the temperature steady between 68°F and 74°F (20°C to 23°C). Temperatures outside this range can lead to stress, increased metabolism, and a shortened lifespan.
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Ideal TDS levels for PRL shrimp range from 120 to 180 ppm. TDS levels indicate the concentration of dissolved minerals in the water, which are essential for the shrimp’s health, especially during molting.
- General Hardness (GH): Maintain GH between 4-6 dGH to provide the necessary calcium and magnesium for healthy exoskeleton formation.
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): A low KH (0-1 dKH) helps maintain stable and slightly acidic pH levels, which are optimal for Caridina shrimp.
Feeding and Nutrition for Pure Red Line Shrimp
A well-balanced diet is essential for maintaining the health and vibrant coloration of Pure Red Line shrimp. In the wild, these shrimp feed on biofilm, algae, and decomposing plant matter. Replicating a diverse shrimp food in captivity will enhance their coloration and overall health.
- High-Quality Shrimp Food: Use specialized Caridina shrimp pellets or granules rich in proteins, minerals, and color-enhancing ingredients. Brands like Shrimp Envy and Kats Aquatics are popular choices.
- Vegetables and Leaf Litter: Offer blanched spinach, zucchini, or kale once a week. Indian almond leaves (Catappa leaves) not only provide food but also release tannins, which help maintain slightly acidic water.
- Protein Supplements: Pure Red Line shrimp benefit from an occasional boost of protein. Include freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia once a week to support healthy growth and successful molting.
- Biofilm and Algae: Encourage natural biofilm growth by incorporating driftwood and moss into your tank. This provides a continuous source of food and promotes natural foraging behavior.
Breeding Pure Red Line Shrimp
Breeding Pure Red Line shrimp can be a rewarding experience for hobbyists. These aquatic shrimp breed readily under optimal conditions, but achieving high survival rates requires attention to detail.
- Sexing PRL Shrimp: Females are typically larger, more vibrant, and have a curved underbelly. Males are smaller and slimmer. Identifying both sexes is essential for a successful breeding colony.
- Ideal Breeding Tank: Use a dedicated breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as shrimp tubes and moss. Maintain stable water parameters to encourage breeding behavior.
- Mating Behavior: Females release pheromones after molting, signaling males to mate. The female carries eggs under her abdomen for about 3-4 weeks until they hatch.
- Caring for Juveniles: Juveniles hatch as miniature adults and do not have a larval stage. They are delicate and require a stable environment with sufficient biofilm and hiding spots to thrive. Use powdered shrimp food to feed the young shrimp.
Regularly monitor the breeding tank to ensure stable water conditions by using water test kit and a healthy food supply for the growing shrimp population.
Tank Mates and Compatibility of Pure Red Line Shrimp
Choosing the right tank mates is crucial for the success of your Pure Red Line shrimp colony. PRL shrimp are best kept in species-only tanks or with other peaceful, non-aggressive species.
Snails
Nerite snails and Malaysian Trumpet snails are excellent choices. These freshwater snails help control algae without competing for food.
Small Fish
If you prefer a community setup, consider microfish like Chili Rasboras or Pygmy Corydoras. These freshwater fish are small, peaceful, and unlikely to prey on the shrimp.
Other Caridina Shrimp
You can keep PRL shrimp with other Caridina variants, such as Blue Bolt or Black King Kong shrimp, but ensure the water parameters are compatible.
Non-compatible Tank Mates
Avoid aggressive or predatory fish, like Bettas and Cichlids, as they may stress or prey on the shrimp.
Enhance the Aquarium Tank with Aquatic Plants and Decoration
Incorporating live plants and thoughtful aquarium decorations into your shrimp tank not only enhances its appearance but also contributes to the well-being of your Pure Red Line shrimp. Plants and decorations create hiding places, foster biofilm growth, and help stabilize water quality.
Aquatic Plants
Adding aquatic plants is highly beneficial for shrimp tanks, as they provide a natural environment and additional food sources.
Moss Plants
Java Moss and Christmas Moss are excellent for PRL shrimp because they offer a dense structure for hiding, especially for newly hatched shrimp. Moss also fosters biofilm growth, which serves as a natural and continuous food source.
Anubias and Bucephalandra
Bucephalandra and Anubias are low-light plants that are ideal for shrimp tanks. They can be attached to driftwood or rocks, and their broad leaves create surfaces for biofilm growth. Some popular Anubias species include Anubias nana, Anubias nana petite, and Anubias barteri.
Cryptocoryne and Java Fern
These are hardy, low-maintenance plants that thrive in low-light conditions. Cryotocoryne like Cryptocoryne parva, Crytocoryne Lutea and Java Fern help absorb excess nutrients, reducing algae growth and maintaining water quality.
Floating Plants
Floating plants such as Salvinia Minima or Red Root Floater are great for shading the tank and absorbing nitrates. They also help keep the water cooler, which is beneficial in maintaining optimal temperatures for Pure Red Line shrimp.
Plant Care Tips
Maintain a regular trimming schedule to prevent plants from overcrowding the tank. Overgrown plants can reduce water flow and trap debris, affecting water quality. Use shrimp-safe fertilizers free of copper, as copper is toxic to Caridina shrimp.
Decorations
Adding decorations like aquarium driftwood, aquarium rocks, and shrimp-specific caves enhances the tank's aesthetics and provides practical benefits.
- Driftwood (Cholla Wood or Spider Wood): Driftwood is a popular choice because it releases tannins, which lower the pH and create a slightly acidic environment favored by Pure Red Line shrimp. Bonsai driftwood also hosts biofilm, providing a consistent food source.
- Rocks (Dragon Stone, Lava Rock): These rocks are inert and safe for shrimp tanks. They offer hiding spots and increase the surface area for biofilm growth. Avoid sharp-edged rocks that might injure the shrimp.
- Shrimp Caves and Tubes: Provide designated hiding spaces for molting shrimp. During molting, shrimp are vulnerable, and these hiding spots offer them a safe place to shed their exoskeleton and recover.
When selecting decorations, ensure they are aquarium-safe and free of harmful chemicals. Rinse thoroughly before adding them to the tank.
Managing the Health of Pure Red Line Shrimp
Common Health Issues
- Molting Problems: Improper molting is a common issue among Pure Red Line shrimp, often caused by low mineral content in the water. To prevent molting issues, maintain proper GH (4-6 dGH) and ensure the shrimp have access to a mineral-rich diet.
- Bacterial Infections: Symptoms include lethargy, discolored patches, and unusual swimming patterns. Bacterial infections can spread quickly and are often caused by poor water quality. Maintain pristine water conditions and consider using Indian almond leaves, which have antibacterial properties.
- Parasites (Scutariella, Vorticella): Parasites can attach to the shrimp’s body, causing irritation and stress. Quarantine new shrimp for at least two weeks before adding them to the main tank to prevent the spread of parasites. A salt bath (using aquarium salt) can help treat minor infestations.
Health Management Tips
- Regular Water Testing: Test water parameters weekly to ensure they remain within the optimal range. Invest in a comprehensive test kit that covers pH, GH, KH, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.
- Quarantine New Additions: Always quarantine new shrimp or plants for a minimum of two weeks. This helps prevent the introduction of diseases and parasites into your established tank.
- Observe Shrimp Behavior: Healthy PRL shrimp are active, constantly grazing on biofilm or algae. Changes in behavior, such as hiding excessively or a lack of appetite, may indicate health problems.
Dealing with Common Challenges in Pure Red Line Shrimp Care
1. Molting Issues
Molting is a critical process where the shrimp sheds its exoskeleton to grow. Problems can arise if the shrimp cannot molt properly, leading to "molting death syndrome."
Solutions:
- Ensure Adequate Calcium and Minerals: Use shrimp-specific remineralizers in your RO water to maintain proper GH levels (4-6 dGH).
- Provide Hiding Spaces: Create safe areas where molting shrimp can hide and recover without being disturbed.
2. Unstable Water Parameters
Pure Red Line shrimp are highly sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters. Sudden changes can lead to stress, illness, and even death.
Solutions:
- Gradual Changes: When performing water changes, ensure the new water matches the tank's current parameters (pH, GH, KH, temperature).
- Consistent Maintenance: Establish a routine for testing and adjusting water parameters. Invest in high-quality water tester to monitor the tank conditions accurately.
3. Algae Overgrowth
Algae can be both a benefit and a nuisance in shrimp tanks. While shrimp feed on some algae types, excessive growth can indicate nutrient imbalances.
Solutions:
- Control Lighting: Limit the lighting to 6-8 hours per day to reduce algae growth.
- Introduce Algae-Eating Snails: Nerite snails or Mystery Snails are excellent at controlling algae without competing for food with the shrimp.
Advanced Techniques for Enhancing the Color and Pattern of Pure Red Line Shrimp
The beauty of Pure Red Line shrimp lies in their intense red coloration and distinctive white patterns. Enhancing these features requires a combination of selective breeding, optimal tank conditions, and a specialized diet.
1. Selective Breeding
To achieve deeper red hues and clear white bands, focus on selective breeding. Choose shrimp with the most vivid coloration and patterns as your breeding stock. Over time, this selective approach will result in offspring with enhanced colors.
2. Specialized Diet for Color Enhancement
Include color-enhancing foods rich in carotenoids and astaxanthin, which are natural pigments that boost red coloration. Look for products like Shrimp King Color or feed natural supplements like spirulina and paprika powder in moderation.
3. Optimal Water Parameters
Maintaining slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-6.8) helps intensify the red coloration of PRL shrimp. Avoid using water sources with high alkalinity, as this can dull the colors over time.
